Judy Lloyd Schumaker began as a home economics teacher at Topeka High in the spring of 1971. During her twenty-three years at Topeka High, she expanded the home economics curriculum to include classes in Regional and International Cooking, Creative Cooking, and Meals and Menus. Judy and her students catered hospitality rooms for sporting events and hosted school receptions. While at Topeka High, Judy was the sponsor for pep club, cheerleading, and student government, directed Homecoming and Royalty of Courts halftime ceremonies and supervised Student Government elections. Judy and a fellow teacher developed a Peer Leadership Class to teach students important leadership skills, the precursor to what is now known as the Link Program. She received commendations for Facilitating Academic Excellence within USD 501 and received an Emporia State University Certificate of Honor. In 1993 she received the USD 501 Distinguished Staff Award. Judy has the distinction of being the only known teacher to be married in the beautiful historic Topeka High School Library
